WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?

In a nut shell Mindfulness is a form of meditation, it is a technique you can learn to become more aware of your mind, body and thoughts in the present moment. You can practice it no matter who you are, your background, beliefs, age, or experience. You may have already heard of Mindfulness in books, on TV, at schools, workplaces, community centres or even on social media. It is not surprising that Mindfulness is becoming so popular in the UK because It is a relatively simple addition to your life that brings big benefits.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MINDFULNESS?

Therapy is personal, and what works for one person might not work for another. Overall Mindfulness is an effective therapy and its benefits are far reaching and have been proven time and again in scientific experiments, here are just a few:

  1. Improved Physical Health

Reduced blood pressure, hypertension, chronic pain, stress, improved sleep quality [i]and reduced stomach problems[ii]

  1. Improved Mental Health

Reduced stress and anxiety, depression, negative feelings, anger and tension. Improved resilience by creating a space between thoughts and feelings. Mindfulness can also help cope with eating disorders, addiction, conflicts, OCD.[iii]

  1. Improved Academic and Work Success

Better coping with workload and improved performance, more prosocial behaviours. Increased self-control and self-awareness.[iv]

  1. Reduced chance of burn out

Ability to choose your reactions and calm the mind and body for a greater sense of wellbeing. Employees that practice mindfulness were less likely to leave their jobs.  [v]

HOW DO I PRACTICE MINDFULNESS RIGHT NOW?

Start with some basic Mindfulness meditation, sit comfortably and focus on your breathing. Let the thoughts enter and exit your mind without holding on to them, notice them and let them pass with acceptance but don’t dwell on them and instead redirect your focus to your breath. This promotes self-acceptance. Attempt the five senses exercise  [vi]notice all of your senses and take note of what you can see, hear, smell, touch and taste. Alternatively download the free CALMapp, which is rated the number one app for meditation and sleep.
